The item: The combat boot dominates this season

The best combat boots to add to your autumn/winter wardrobe for stylish and versatile looks.

It’s autumn, which means we can finally wear our combat boots to death! If you don’t yet have a pair, or you’re on the lookout for another style, then you’re in the right place. Consider them the must-have boots for autumn/winter 2019.

Why we want them

Instagram-worthy and influencer-approved, the combat boot is the shoe to own this season. Combat boots were a particular favourite in the ’90s and are back with a vengeance. So much so that the Hadid sisters (Bella in particular), Kaia Gerber and Hailey Bieber have been spotted wearing them like a second skin in between runway shows. And now we want them too!

How to wear them

The trick to wearing them correctly is in the styling. Combat boots are versatile enough to wear with your favourite pair of mom jeans or with a dress, and they look great with a cute pair of socks peeking out the top. Roll your jeans up to ankle height to show off your boots, or wear them with dresses and skirts that are ankle height or shorter for a feminine look with some attitude. Avoid floor-sweeping lengths that hide your boots and don’t do any justice to the look. The combat-hiker hybrid is admired for its badass, don’t-mess-around look, so pairing it with a feminine summer dress will add some edge; go for flowing fabrics in pretty floral prints for the perfect balance. Although the boot has punk/grunge undertones, designers have started experimenting with the design and silhouette of the shoe to make it more mainstream. From heels, platforms and buckles to lace-ups, slip-ons and bejewelled styles, the combat boot is here to serve us all.

We’re crushing on these winter knits for men

Cosy up this winter in stylish and versatile knitwear.

We’ve got you covered with the latest trends in knitwear to elevate your style in the colder months.

Colour blocking gives the essential winter knit an instant update. The block-like stripes add a stylish element to this winter warmer, making a bold statement that will separate your look from the crowd.

The V-neck is as easy-going as it gets. Nail the layered look by wearing your knit over a shirt or golfer, exposing the collar and leaving a little peeking out at the hemline. Alternatively, wear your V-neck as a stand-alone piece, paired with a classic pair of pants or tailored jeans for smart-casual appeal.

Although cardigans are usually considered to be casual, they are actually easy to dress up if you know how. Chinos, a smart shirt and printed tie paired with your favourite cardigan will give off a sophisticated, polished. Stay on trend with a slim-fit style.

The crew neck is a classic without which most winter wardrobes would suffer. Throw it over a shirt with trousers and sneakers for a casual day at the office, team it with your faithful denim jacket and cargos for casual weekend appeal, or dress up with a sleek suit jacket over your knit for a professional look that’s boardroom ready.

How to rock the denim-on-denim trend without looking like a cowboy

Double down on denim for a look that’s as cool as it is comfortable.

When it comes to versatility, comfort and laid-back cool, denim can’t be beaten. Considering its universal appeal, it’s not surprising that wearing denim with more denim is a trend that’s come back into fashion. It can be tricky to pull off though, so take our advice to look hot without trying too hard.

Go for contrast

Keep the look casual and cool with denims that are visibly different, like blues with shades of grey or black. Once you’ve mastered the basic look try breaking it up with printed T-shirts and other interesting pieces.

Stay consistent

Another option is to wear similar pieces together: dark with dark, faded with faded and washed with washed. Avoid looking matchy-matchy and add a solid colour, whether it’s neutral like white or a vibrant colour, it will make your whole look more sleek.

Live on the edge

If you tend to play it safe with your style we dare you to step out of your comfort zone and take a fashion risk. Distressing, patchwork or slogans on your denim add interest to your look and show you’re not afraid to try something different.

Choosing the right pair of jeans for a perfect fit

Every woman needs at least one pair of denims that fits her body to a T. Read further for tips on how to find the right fit.

The perfect denim fit is basically a non-negotiable in the fashion world – you’d be surprised by just how much it affects your silhouette. Determining your body shape is the first step towards getting it just right.

CURVY/ HOURGLASS/ PEAR

If your hips and thighs are wider than your waist, then you have an hourglass or curvy figure. A bootcut or flared leg is particularly flattering for this body shape as the wider bottoms balance out your hips, while the snug fit around the waist flatters your curvy shape. A curvy-fit straight leg is also a great choice – it moulds to the body beautifully, accentuating the hips and waist. Give yourself some extra height with booties or heels.

PETITE

Opt for medium to high-rise jeans that sit at the narrowest part of your waist to show off your natural curves. Wide or flared legs can make your legs appear shorter, so either avoid this style or wear it with heels. A straight cut is most flattering for a petite shape, as it hugs the legs perfectly. Look for a tapered hem that ends on – or just above – your ankle. Dark-wash denim is your best bet, streamlining your frame and creating the appearance of length.

INVERTED TRIANGLE/ATHLETIC

If your shoulders are broader than your waist and hips, you fall into this category. The trick is to accentuate your bottom half to balance your silhouette. Bootcuts and boyfriend/girlfriend jeans will achieve this. Jeans with texture and details such as cargo pockets, fades and cuffs, will further emphasise your lower half.

TALL & LEAN/RECTANGULAR

Women with this body shape tend to have hips and shoulders that are the same width, with few curves and not much definition in the waist. Fortunately for you, just about every cut of denim suits this body shape. Looking to add volume to your lower half? Go for wide-leg or flared jeans with patterns and details. A skinny fit creates the illusion of curves, while low-rise to mid-waist jeans add shape to your buttocks and create a defined wasitline. Back-pocket details also draw attention to this area.

APPLE

Apple-shaped bodies carry volume around the middle. Select jeans with a little more ‘give’ in the waistline for comfort, and to avoid overspill. High-waisted jeans draw attention to the waist, so rather go for a mid-rise style, or a pair with a wide waistband. Make the most of your slim legs by wearing a straight cut or a slight bootcut to balance out your proportions. Denims in contrasting colours will add contouring to your thighs.

The return of ’90’s fashion

Take the nostalgic route and adopt trends that have their roots firmly in the ’90s – plaid shirts to dad jeans and bum bags.

Grunge meets hip-hop, as we throwback to the most iconic looks of the 90s (without climbing in a time capsule). Mix and match your modern wardrobe with style favourites from the decade.

MAD FOR PLAID

The plaid shirt is and will always be quintessentially ’90s – the grunge look made famous by Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain is now adopted by the likes of Pharrell Williams. If you tie the shirt around your waist or leave it unbuttoned to show off your graphic T-shirt it will instantly modernise the look.

MUST-HAVE: DAD DENIMS

Dad jeans have a relaxed fit that skim your legs as opposed to hugging them. Roll up the bottom of the jeans to show off your cool printed socks and kicks so that your style is more in tune with the times.

GO TUCK YOURSELF

Now you see it out, now you don’t. Borrowing from dad’s style, the full-tuck T-shirt is a big hit, especially if you’re wearing a really cool belt. Nothing in fashion is done without cause.

SNAPBACK TO REALITY

You couldn’t look left or right in the ’90s without seeing a snapback cap. Wear your snapback with swag and re-live the hip-hop glory days. Wear it backwards for extra-cool brownie points.

IT’S A BIKER’S LIFE

Who says you need to be on an actual motorbike to look good in leather? No one. The truth is, leather jackets have never gone out of style. But they did have their shining moment in the ’90s.

THE TREND: THE NEW ANIMAL PRINT

Who doesn’t love a bit of animal print? This season welcomes back the notorious trend, but this time in bold colours, new silhouettes and more versatility.
Animal print is back with a vengeance. Bolder colours, unexpected silhouettes and diverse patterns put a fresh twist on the trend this season.

A staple in most autumn/winter fashion week collections, animal print has migrated to summer in colours, patterns and styles we previously only dreamed of (thank you fashion gods). Just look at Off-White’s snakeskin in battery-acid green, Burberry’s brown cow-print skirts and Roberto Cavalli’s abstract tiger/zebra hybrids – all of which made the classic leopard print look (dare we say it) rather basic on the SS19 runways.
