3 bedding trends we’re obsessed with right now

We cover the latest trends in bedroom decor to really give your most personal space in your house a stylish update.

Update your most personal space in your home, your bedroom, with the latest winter-appropriate prints and accessories.

Trend 1: GOTHIC NATURE

Head into the tropics with prints that are more dramatic and less cliché than the punch-drunk primaries of old. Think juicy hues set against deep, inky tones for an opulent, luxe feel.

Trend 2: A TOUCH OF TERRAZZO

Traditionally used on walls and floors, the fragmented terrazzo pattern has made its way into a variety of décor accessories, for a modern take on the trend with a striking effect. Terrazzo-inspired prints, are a subtle yet effective way to add unique personality to your home.

Private Collection textured scatter cushions 159.95 eachPrivate Collection ruched scatter cushion 229.95Private Collection quilted silk scatter cushion 229.95; Private Collection metallic textured scatter cushion 229.95; Private Collection terazzo-print duvet cover with pillowcases from 199.95 – 399.95

Trend 3: SOFT TROPICS

This trend is a subtle way to interpret tropical prints. The botanical prints softer, diluted by a desaturated colour palette this season. There’s a strong painterly element to a lot of the designs, making the look feel less imposing that out-and-out tropical palms.

Hotel Collection textured velvet scatter cushions from 199.95 each; Hotel Collection velvet scatter cushions from 199.95 each; Hotel Collection crème Chenille knit throw 799.95; Hotel Collection pomelo duvet cover with pillowcases from 1199.95 – 1499.95

5 #BreakOutFashion trends from this week’s runway show

We break down all the major trends you can expect to see this winter, and it comes from a reliable source – the runway.

Earlier this week in Sandton, Edgars showcased the hottest looks for AW19 at the #BreakOutFashion show. Fashion maven Nkgabiseng Motau was there to report the trends – here’s her roundup.

I’m sitting in the perfect spot: the second row at a trendy fashion show. It’s not too far away from the glam A-listers and it’s not FROW (front row), where I know I would be panicking because my outfit is not custom-made. I’m here to see the launch of the Edgars’ autumn/winter 2019 collection – the first of its kind. I’m sitting with my phone in the air and my jaw on the floor… What a feast for the eyes! But I must not get distracted – I have a job to do. I am looking for the biggest upcoming trends for the new season.

Unexpected fabric pairing

The rule of thumb for fabrics, as told by the runway, is that there are no rules. I see stretchy athletic fabrics appear alongside chunky winter knits and denim jackets. I want to liken it to a frozen yogurt stand; the variety of fabrics represent all the toppings. You can choose to keep it simple or go wild; it’s all up to you. Imagine houndstooth leggings with sporty stripes down the centre… Sound too good/unique/fun/outrageous to be true? Don’t despair, you can grab a pair from JX. I also notice the pairing of heavy fabrics such as denim, (faux) fur and leather with light fabrics such as chiffon, cotton and tulle. Whip on a pair of utility boots with a wispy skirt and a chunky knit sweater and you’re chic, honey! Minimal use of fabric is also a vibe, so if you’re more into matchy-matchy sets, then worry not, throwing on a two-piece is still hot.

Print is here to stay

Are you ready to live on the wild side? If not, get ready because animal print is back, and in more imaginative ways than ever before. Leopard print is paired with versatile items from the puffy bomber jacket to the delicate blouse. The print can be worn in moderation by adding a small piece to a muted ensemble, or in abundance like an entire outfit of just animal print. I’m loving all the clashing of prints as well. Forget what the fashion police said, you can mix prints! Plaid, houndstooth and stripes should all make an appearance in your wardrobe this coming winter. This is a brave new season for prints.

Fashion of the 70s, 80s and 90s

The ’70s, ’80s and ’90s called, and they want their fashion back – but we’re keeping it! I’m seeing pieces from each era on the runway right before me – pick and choose from one era or mix and match your favourite pieces; it’s all cool. Funky ’70’s stripes and moody tones; athletic combinations poached from the ’90s; and even the wonderful pleated A-line skirts of the ’80s are yours. I’ve fallen in love with the wispy printed dress I see before me, worn with a yellow beret befitting of Pantone’s identified colour trend of Aspen Gold  – the look was the perfect mix of eras.

Bold and bright colour

It looks like the sun hasn’t set on yellow just yet. Having been a huge colour in summer as predicted by Pantone, the colour is here to stay. I saw yellow on the red carpet shortly before the runway show began and now I see it before me on the runway models – whether in small splashes or full suits, this colour is here to brighten up the winter. If you’re looking to make a similar colour statement, look no further than D66’s range of suits in the trendy burnt orange, another sun-inspired hue that is set to challenge the chill of winter. If you’re more conservative and in-your-face colour isn’t your thing, muted tones are still all the rage. White paired with grey lush, heavy coats and suit jackets make for a cool, sophisticated winter look that is definitely #BreakOutFashion.

Athleisure is the future

And the award goes to athleisure! Move out frumpy sweats and make way for this sleek sporty trend. Athleisure is still dominating and the go-to way to wear athletic clothes (other than to work-out, of course). A combination of comfort and cool, it offers wearers a chance to mention leggings and a formal shirt in the same sentence. I must have missed the memo; attendees of the show are somewhat matching the altheisure looks seen on the runway – mixing cycling shorts and hoodies with heels, and T-shirts and sneakers with suit jackets. This is definitely my #BreakOutFashion trend of the night.

When they said ‘winter is coming’ I had no idea they meant it would be this stylish! Edgars shelves are filled with this wonderful new collection from brands Kelso, Free2BU, Stone Harbour and JX, among many others. I’ve spotted favourite international brands like Levi’s, Puma and Calvin Klein too. Now, if you will excuse me, I have all the notes I need gathered in one place – my shopping list.

Siphokazi Veti’s 4 denim styling hacks

Style influencer Siphokazi Veti gives us advice on how to style your favourite denim pieces for a look that’s winter fresh.

Denim for winter? How original, you may be thinking. But when style and body-positive activist and influencer Siphokazi Veti lets you in on her best styling tips, you’ll be rethinking your denim strategy for the new season.

1. Add a Killer Accessory

A pair of jeans and a sweater is an easy go-to look for winter, but it can get boring day after day. Add the trendy moon bag to your ensemble for an instant update. Finish off with a pair of heels, and voila, your look strikes the perfect balance of sophisticated and cool.

Kelso Curves colour-block jersey 279.95; Kelso Curves skinny denim jeans 449.95; Free 2BU transparent earrings 39.95; Accessorize moon bag 399; Free 2BU pointed-toe patent heels 299.95

2. Embrace stripes

Denim and a white T-shirt is a fashion staple so classic no wardrobe should be without it. Take the timeless appeal of this look and throw some stripes into the mix for a modern upgrade. A stripe down the side of the shirt is understated and cool. Add a pair of statement boots and you’re good to go!

Kelso Curves side-stripe shirt 349.95; Kelso Curves high-waisted denims 399.95; Free 2BU tassel drop earrings 79.95; stacking rings (set of 5) 59.95; Steve Madden pointed-toe sock boots 1599

3. Layer like a queen

Layering is an art. It can be tricky to get it just right, but it’s essential for trans-seasonal dressing. Start with the base layers, which need to be the thinnest, and then pile on according to thickness. To get the balance right and avoid looking too bulky and sloppy, make sure you mix tight with loose. Go for tight-fitting jeans and a comfy pair of ankle boots to complete the look.

Kelso Curves quilted gilet 549.95; Kelso Curves striped jersey 299.95; Kelso Curves distressed denims 499.95; Free 2BU hoop earrings (set of 3) 59.95; Accessorize beaded bracelets (set of 9) 199; Steve Madden suede ankle boots 1499

4. Keep it casual

For casual days at the office, pair a blazer with your statement T-shirt and jeans. It’s versatile, timeless and effortlessly chic. Add buckle-up boots and colour popping accessories to bring your relaxed but stylish look together.

Kelso Curves statement T-shirt 159.95; Kelso Curves rip and repair denims 449.95; Accessorize beaded necklace 299; stacking rings (set of 5) 59.95; Accessorize satchel bag 799; Steve Madden buckled boots 1299

South Africa’s most stylish celebs walked the red carpet at Edgars’ #BreakOutFashion show this week

See all the looks celebrities and influencers wore on the red carpet to Edgars’ Break Out runway show

On Wednesday 27 March, Edgars transformed its famous red square into a glamorous red carpet for the #BreakOutFashion show. We sent fashion maven Nkgabiseng Motau to rub shoulders with the country’s most stylish celebs and influencers, to find out what they were wearing (of course!), and to ask them what #BreakOutFashion means to them. Here’s her report.

The stars who rocked the red carpet

When a red carpet comes out, there’s no doubt it brings with it high fashion and gorgeous people. We saw the likes of Jessica Nkosi, Lerato Kganyago, Roxy Burger and the cutest little star, Dj Arch Jnr, to name a few. It was obvious to all there that the shining couple was rapper Priddy Ugly and his partner actor Bontle Modiselle. Also in attendance were star influencers LexLeo AKA denstist to the stars AKA Dr Smile, Siphokazi Veti, Tshepi Vundla and Nikiwe Dlova.

Red carpet fashion at its best

It was a scene full of glamour and ‘oh yes, honey’. Jessica and Lerato both glowed in yellow (trend alert), with Jessica in a flirty floral number and Lerato in a bright power suit. Yellow is the colour right now and its made a bold entrance this winter both on red carpets and on Edgars’ runway. As for the men, LexLeo and the show’s host, Kat Sinivasin, both looked dapper in monotone suits of maroon and navy, and showed us exactly how to nail the tonal suited look.

Where was this and why wasn’t I there?

The exclusive runway show was attended by invited guests and was held at Edgars’ flagship store in Sandton City. The space was transformed for the most fashionable people in South Africa to shocase their individual sense of style, all while mingling and being entertained by the iconic Sho Madjozi, a fashion icon herself. The store proved to be the perfect setting after the show, as it was open for a little late-night shopping.

I chatted to some of the stars and got them to spill the proverbial style tea.

Timeless style is…

Best winter trend…

A trend that you have embraced now but never thought you’d wear three years ago…

3 ways to style your home like an interior designer

Update your home and give it a designer feel with modern geometric patterns, lush plants and metallic pastel shades.

Follow these styling tips when updating your home for a designer finish without the spend.

Style tip 1 Go with geometric accessories

Geometric furniture, prints and accessories are big news right now. We’re seeing a move towards sculptural, precious-gem-like sidetables and furniture made from wire, which add interest and depth, giving the illusion of bigger space due to the open frames. If you’re keen to give your home an entire makeover, you can introduce the  geometric trend in small ways. Use diamond-shaped tiles to create an Escher-esque artwork for your kitchen or bathroom backsplash, go minimalist with geometric-print cushions or art prints, or add subtle dimension in the form of a matt black faceted vase or accessory. The trick here is to balance the scale of the design colours – if the pattern is busy, go for subdued colours, and vice versa. Create a sense of luxury without spending a lot of money by introducing gold accents on smalls and accessories.

Style tip 2 Bring in plant life

Indoor plants provide us with a connection to the outdoors that’s especially appealing to inner-city dwellers. The focus is on compact, sturdy succulents that are simultaneously water-wise and easy to maintain. The larger, leafier varieties still reign supreme. ‘Our most popular house plants are Monstera deliciosa and Philodendron selloum. Magnificently lush and leafy, both of these look amazing displayed in handwoven baskets, as kokedamas (moss balls), or in water instead of soil in beautiful vases,’ says Ashleigh Martyn, owner of online nursery Mother City Jungle. It’s also worth considering artificial plants to spruce up your space. Orchids, which are notoriously difficult to care for, can serve the right amount of class without all the hassle, and you get to enjoy the plant’s gorgeous blooms all year around.

Style tip 3 Add candy colours

On the other end of the colour spectrum, we’re seeing a resurgence of candy colours in interiors. ‘Pastel candy shades, which are traditionally quite feminine, have been reintroduced in soft metallic finishes, coloured glass and beautiful blush linens,’ says Melissa Lawrence, owner of Cape Town-based creative consultancy Studio Melissa Louise. ‘These elements are easily paired with a neutral colour palette and, when used in abundance, create visual intrigue.’ Consider bringing in woven textiles such as rattan, cane and wicker to balance out the fun pastels for a look that’s adult appropriate. In terms of paint, Plascon’s Glamour range fits the bill. Mermaid Jewel and Candy Tuft on a feature wall or ceiling will add character to any space, just be sure to use these attention-grabbing hues sparingly – your chosen candy colour should only make up about 30% of the colour in the room.

Beauty trends you need to know about right now

We’re always on the lookout for new beauty trends, and these make our must-have list for the new season.

We round up the biggest beauty trends seen on runways for the upcoming season. From glitter to grunge, here’s what’s hot for autumn/winter 2019.

COLOUR SHOTS

Soft pastel washes and bright primary hues lit up eyelids on all the major runways for 2019. If you’re not accustomed to wearing  bold shades, start with soft, complementary colours. We matched blue eye shadow with blue mascara for this fresh, pretty look. The trend is all about experimenting with colour, so don’t be afraid to try different shades as your style evolves.

POLISHED SKIN

Creamy, dewy skin with a natural-looking glow is always on-trend. Get the look by layering moisturisers, primers and strobe creams as opposed to heavy foundations and concealers that tend to cake on the skin, leaving your complexion looking dull and flat. Select products that offer plenty of hydration, as a lack of moisture is one of the biggest contributors to a lacklustre complexion.

GLITTER MAKE-UP

Glitter make-up is having a moment. Edgy and striking, it’s a fun way to bring a sparkle to your look and draw attention to your favourite features. Although we don’t want an OTT full face of glitter a la models at Giambattista Valli, Paris Fashion Week AW18, we do like a little! Stick to one area (such as the outer and inner eye) and keep the rest of the face neutral with a healthy glow, for a polished finish that won’t compete with the glitter.

ROCK ‘N ROLL GLAM

Punk is back! Think smudgy haloed lids, imperfect water-lined eyes and glossy, textured black pigment – all these make-up looks lend themselves to the ’80s’ grunge look. Pair with clean, polished skin for a modern and sophisticated spin on trend.

ARTY EYES

Graphic make-up effects are so hot right now. From drawing outside the lines to floating cat eyes and sharp, polygonal edges, there are a variety of ways to interpret the trend. In this look we contrasted bright purple shadow with a graphic negative space cat eye, which makes the exaggerated shape even more striking.

METALLIC LIPS

Metallic shades are a powerful way to draw attention to your lips and give your look a bold, dramatic edge. Here, we created a cool contrast of metal hues giving the illusion of a bigger and fuller pout. The metallic effect packs a punch, so keep the rest of your make-up minimal for a sophisticated look with the focus firmly on your lips.

The 4 trendy men’s jackets keeping you stylish this winter

Baggy and warm clothes don’t mean a compromise in style. These four jackets will keep you warm and fashionable this season.

The jackets that are trending for 2019 are bold, stylish and easy to wear. Throw them over your favourite knits and shirts for a look that’s as cool and relaxed as you are.

THE BOMBER JACKET

The bomber gives an edge to your casual weekend outfits. Classic colours like navy and black are sleek and versatile, while bright, daring colours make a strong fashion statement. Olive works well with the utilitarian trend and is best paired with dark jeans and sneakers. Whatever your colour preference, the bomber jacket is an effortless way to up your cool factor this winter.

THE PUFFER JACKET

Seriously though, no winter wardrobe is complete without a puffer jacket. It does so much more than just keep you warm – durable, versatile and stylish without trying too hard, it’s the ultimate all-rounder. Wear it to the office over a printed button-up shirt with chinos and boots for a smart vibe, or go casual with vibrant shades that give your off-duty look some street cred.

THE PEA COAT

Minimal with a strong masculine feel is the best way to describe the ‘It’ coat of the season. Classic, sturdy and good looking, the pea coat will give your weekend wear a pulled-together look, and add a level of polished sophistication to your work wardrobe.

THE DENIM JACKET

It’s no surprise that the denim jacket is a perennial favourite for men and women alike. From cowboy to trucker styles it embodies a spirit of freedom that’s universally flattering and appealing. The best advantage of a denim jacket is its layering potential, allowing you to create multiple looks while keeping warm in casual style.

Top travel trends for 2019

Broaden your travel horizons with tailor-made adventures to satisfy your wanderlust.

If you’re stuck in a holiday rut, or just looking for new adventures, it helps to keep an eye on the new and exciting ways people are exploring the planet.
Lower Lake Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
There’s a definite appeal to visiting global urban hotspots like New York, London or Paris. But with that, come hoards of other tourists, high prices and oversubscribed ‘experiences’.
On the other hand, there are plenty of beautiful places in the world that you can visit without standing in queues, or having to leave a TripAdvisor rating. Theresa Richardson, Travel Corporation Managing Director for South Africa, lists places like Scandinavia, Peru, the Amazon and Croatia as the trendiest nature-inspired tourism destinations for 2019.
Scandinavia offers the opportunity to witness one of the world’s most astonishing spectacles – the Midnight Sun – where the sun shines for almost 24 hours of each day during the summer months. ‘Scandinavia’s fjords and glaciers, the Midnight Sun in summer and the Northern Lights in winter, are out of this world,’ says Richardson. ‘The Flam Railway in Norway – one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world – is a great way to explore the country’s stunning scenery.’
Hamnoy Village, Norway
While Machu Picchu is still one of the world’s most beautiful sites to visit – and it shows, with a ticketing system introduced recently to try to curb the damage done by high visitor volumes – there are plenty of other places in South America that’ll take your breath away. Peru’s Sacred Valley boasts snow-capped mountain peaks and scores of other ancient ruins to explore, and the chance to feast on traditional Peruvian cuisine in one of the region’s ‘forgotten villages’ is soul-enriching travel at its best. Adding a responsible, sustainable trip to the Amazon is simple from there, where licensed operators will help you tread lightly through the million-year-old jungle in the hope of spotting scarlet macaws, howler monkeys, and even a sneaky jaguar along the way.
‘Search for #krkawaterfalls on Instagram to see why Croatia makes the list,’ says Richardson. ‘The cascading waterfalls are so turquoise and clear that the pictures look as if they have been Photoshopped…’ She advises visitors to take a two-day Busabout tour in combination with a Croatia Island Hopper Tour, to get the best of the Krka and Plitvice National Parks – and you’ll even enjoy a Croatian-style ‘braai’ along the way.

Co-living

If you’re a solo traveller, hotels can be a little unfriendly, hostels, a little rough around the edges, and suburban Airbnb properties can be quite isolated from the inner-city action.
Enter the new trend: co-living – essentially a form of modern commune for young professionals. Companies like WeLive hosts travellers in apartment blocks in New York and Washington DC offering trendy, shared social spaces that bring people together. The arrangement includes a permanently-staffed front desk at each location, communal spaces like residents’ lounges, chef’s kitchen, gaming centres and 24-hour fitness studios.
You’ll get hotel-like creature comforts, including fresh linen and towels with coffee and tea service, sophisticated décor and top-tier tech with state-of-the-art security, smart climate control and ‘deluxe entertainment systems’. Their automated e-billing system makes it easy to stay for as little or long as you want, and take advantage of the amenities at will.

Digi-travel

Tech in travel is nothing new – it’s now possible to research, book, check-in and explore without interacting with an actual human being. In an ‘always-on’ world, connected consumers expect to be connected travelers, no matter whether they’re travelling for business or leisure.
‘Digital access has altered all aspects of our work and personal lives – from shopping to social interaction, entertainment, banking and fitness, connectivity drives the way we act, choose and spend,’ says Nicole Adonis, FCM Travel Solutions South Africa GM. ‘We talk about a connected consumer being the same as a connected traveller. Consumers who use travel technology in their personal lives, expect the same convenience in their work lives, which places corporate travel stakeholders under pressure to deliver new technologies that simplify the travel process,’ says Adonis.
Millennials and Generation X travellers have a keen interest in Artificial Intelligence and are comfortable using digital assistants on a regular basis, which is why many agencies and operators are adding the functionality to their booking processes. ‘When it comes to travel booking, we’ve seen our own chatbot, Sam, commonly fulfilling this need using a simple and intuitive chatbot-based interface, much the same as Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp, and speeding up processes,’ says Adonis.

Homeware hotels

Do you love a particular brand so much that you’d pay to stay in a hotel inspired entirely by their philosophy and products? ‘Homeware hotels’ are a growing trend, with the double-edged sword of ‘brand heaven’ for enthusiasts – and a chance to sell brand products that catch guests’ eyes, while in situ. Made.com pioneered the concept in Manhattan in 2017 before opening a floating hotel at the Boathouse in London last year.
Japanese lifestyle brand Muji opened two branded properties in China last year, where guests could buy everything from oak chairs to toothbrush stands, shampoo bottles, duvets and even the feather pillows on which they lay their heads each night. It’s convenience shopping at its best!
